'Hamburg Song is about a particular feeling of … well I guess wanting to say you don't want someone's attention all the time, you don't want to be in the spotlight all the time. You just want to be what they consider to be their home. So even though you might just get a small proportion of their attention and time, they consider that to be the most precious. The bit they look forward to the most.
I guess it’s about feeling you’re actually not asking very much.’
- Tim Rice-Oxley
On June 22nd 2012, I saw Keane for the first time. I wrote Tim Rice-Oxley a letter (which I was able to give to him after the show) consisting of five pages telling him how much his lyrics mean to me and how much I admire him and how much I love Keane. I told him in the letter that, “if I wasn’t a broke college student, I would also buy their vinyl records.” Today, I got home from being out of town for a week visiting my friends and on my bed was a package. I was extremely confused because I hadn’t ordered anything before I left and the package was internationally shipped. I opened the over-sized envelope and saw that contents inside included the vinyls for Perfect Symmetry and Strangeland. There was also a letter from Tim saying, “I hope you enjoy this small gift from us.” Small gift? This is the best and most thoughtful gift I’ve ever received. I will never love a band more than I love Keane.

Hopes & Fears
You think your days are ordinary
And no one ever thinks about you
But we’re all the same
And she can hardly breathe without you.
Things are going to change, you know
The battles you have fought won’t go to waste, you know
If things are going to change. It just takes time…

‘Cause baby, I’m not scared of this world when you’re here,
No baby, I’m not scared of this world when you’re here.
